Programs & Services Following are descriptions of several of the programs which are taking place at or are associated with the Nutrition Center: Community Health Program (CHP) Nutrition Services provides clinical nutrition counseling. People are primarily referred to us by the CHP Health Center. We are steadily expanding our outpatient services and third-party insurances can be billed with provider referrals. We are South Berkshire County’s only free-care health center serving low-income families. In collaboration with South Berkshire Women Infants and Children’s (WIC) Program, through A to Z (Apples to Zucchini) Program we provide nutritional education and food for WIC participants. A to Z gives locally grown food to WIC families by providing subscriptions to local farms that offer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We offer hands-on food preparation classes in our adult and child-friendly kitchens to participating families. We are working closely with the public schools to help develop a Wellness Policy in the School District and to assist with nutrition curricula for the classroom. Currently we are working on a grant specific to physical education and related health curricula. Part of this project is to set up panels with pediatricians and dieticians to address the questions of the students, parents and school staff. With the assistance of three Diabetes-related Grants, we work with people individually, offering cooking classes and food choices to people with diabetes to help them self manage and become self-sufficient in their care. The CHP Nutrition Department has received a Planning Grant for Healthy Communities which seeks to create non-traditional partnerships between local health care providers, town offices, religious organizations and advocacy groups to identify and prioritize the community’s Health needs. Healthy Weight Classes are offered at the Berkshire South Community Center, which include nutrition and physical activity instruction. We are members of Massachusetts Healthy Weight Collaborative. |
